Queen‘s Gambit: D. l. Townes (ENFJ)

Functional Order: Fe/Ni/Se/Ti

Dominant Function: Fe

Townes instantly charmed Beth with his warm and charismatic personality. He seems to have genuine interest in his opponents as people and tries to connect with them on a deeper level. He is polite and friendly with others and a graceful loser to Beth, being interested in seeing others succeed as much as himself. His talent in communication also helps him in his job a journalist where he easily connects with people.

Auxiliary Function: Ni

Townes is one of the first difficult opponents Beth face, as he is like Beth an intuitive player and hard to predict. Townes noticed Beth’s potential right from the beginning, spotting her even before he challenges her in a game and later on predicts that she will be one of the words greatest players. Townes is also quite unbothered by social conventions and traditions, shown in his lack of shame being spotted with his partner, even though homosexuality was shunned at that time, showing a free spirited and open minded persona.

Tertiary Function: Se

Townes is always well dressed and aware of his physical charms during his battles. He is also a skilled photographer and perfectionist about his work, wanting to capture the essence of Beth character in a single photograph. While he is normally calm and detached his impulses can get the better him, like during the scene between him and Beth in the hotel room, something he regrets later on.

Inferior Function: Ti

In the beginning he gives Beth all the wrong signals, admiring her for her intellectual capacities and talent in chess, but seemingly having a crush on her, as he doesn‘t see the logical consequences of is actions. He is a skilled strategist and quite analytical in his game with Beth, shown that he has developed his inferior Ti quite well overall. Still he quits chess for a more social and people oriented job.
