Functional Order: Fi/Ne/Si/Te
Dominant Function: Fi
Her feeling function is hard to spot because she kept her past hidden, and never sought external validation for her feelings. Nonetheless, she is clearly dominated by her feelings. She seeks out her cluster-mates for company when she feels lonely but rarely opens up to them. Her feelings are shown through her actions (e.g. avoiding Magnus and Luna’s funeral because she couldn’t say goodbye). Her feelings are clear-cut and deep. She sees identity as somewhat of a black and white concept. She’s never confused about what she was feeling, and identifies herself based on these emotional experiences. For instance, she remarked that the Riley that loved Magnus and Luna died with them, and believed herself to be a new person after, because she thought could no longer love that deeply. She also felt it was a betrayal to them if she were to go back to their tomb and realize she no longer wanted to be dead with them, so she lived by the feeling she identified herself with, and relied on drugs to numb herself instead of try and move on from her loss.
Auxilliary Function: Ne
Out of all of the sensates Riley is among the most hopeful. While others like Sun or Will might view their situation in a more cynical light, Riley is always eager to offer a more optimistic point of view. Riley often prefers her fantasies over reality, shown when she uses her music or logical fairytales as ways to escape the reality of her life. Her dreamy composure makes her seem a bit detached from the world around her at times, which makes sense considering the traumatic experiences she went through. Riley has a strong intuition and is implied to be the one to follow in Angelica‘s footsteps later on, as she is the heart that connects the group of senates.
Tertiary Function: Si
Riley is understandably haunted by her past and often plagued by vivid dreams and memories about it. While this is mainly influenced by her trauma the way she remembers things implies a strong Si usage. Her memories are always painted in a surrealistic way that seems quite impressionistic and bound to her feelings, she connects to these events. Instead of leaving her past behind she accepts that it is a part of hers and notices, how it changed her. She also shows appreciation for the local traditions of her people and the stories she was told as a child, believing them even when grown up, shown in how eager she was to accept the supernatural parts of their sensate connection.
Inferior Function: Te
As her character developed overtime, she turned out to be quite a strategic planner. It was her idea to plant misleading objects in the place she shared with Will, like a soundtrack of Icelandic seagulls chirping, to confuse Whispers and keep him from learning their true location. She also made conflicts work in her favor, like when she connected to the sensate from her rave and then worked to gain their trust. She provided Mr Hoy with factual reasons to let him trust her, by showing him her real location and telling him her name. When her cluster-mate was in trouble, she often turned to the most sensible solution (Sun attacked in prison? Guards!). At times she can be direct, like when she remarked Mr Hoy’s hiding place had “all the modern amenities of a coffin.” She was also the only one to confront Will after he nearly failed to save Capheus from a trap (“that is not good”) when the rest of the cluster was hesitant about being critical with him after he’d just lost his father.
