Dominant Function: Fi
Batty is a deeply felt person and by far the most sensitive member of the Penderwick household. While she seems careless, innocent and childlike on the outside, she hides a rich inner life and deep feelings. Batty is naturally empathetic, especially towards those she considers misunderstood, like animals and outsiders. Her empathy even extends to non living object at times, since especially as a child she is prone to project her own feelings onto them. Her sensitivity also causes her to take others words hurt, like when she blames her for her mothers death, after Skye‘s insensitive‘s word to Jeffrey. Similar to her sister Jane, Batty is also a romantic, seeing Jeffrey as the love of her life and trying to stay true to him against all odds and whatever anybody might think of them.
Auxiliary Function: Ne
Batty decides for herself that one day she and Jeffrey will marry and chases this dream, no matter how impossible it is deemed by those around her. Batty is idealistic in her romantic musing and prone to fantastical thoughts. As a child she is lost in her own dream world, running around with small fairy wings and imagining herself to be some figure in a story. She can be quite scatter brained and make connections seemingly out of nowhere, but is somewhat oblivious to what is directly in front of her. When she tries to befriend a bull out of curiosity as a child, she is to fascinated by imaging all the possibilities of what she could do about him that she fails to notice the very real thread he is imposing on her in the moment.
Tertiary Function: Si
Batty is loyal towards her promises. She will always stay by the side of her family and her life for Jeffrey never once abandoning them. When she is stuck in a depressive mood after feeling she caused the death of her mood, she retreats into her comfort zone and refrains from leaving the house. She enjoys small rituals or certain items that give her a sense of security, like her little fairy wings or the stories her sister Rosalinde reads her to sleep. When loosing the family‘s dog hound, Batty is most affected by the loss of the loyal pet, struggling with letting go of the past. Under stress she is also inclined to obsess about the past and her own supposed mistakes.
Inferior Function: Te
Batty is gentle and non aggressive. She generally does things in her own tempo and enjoys having someone helping her to organize her tasks or look out for her. Still she has a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. When her family struggles with their lack of money, Batty decides to take on a job, even though she is way to young for is. She stats her own small business of petting dog and taking a walk with them. Such small projects, even though well intentioned fail at times and she often seeks members from more practical family members/friends to succeed with them. When her values are threatened or someone she cares about is in danger, Batty can get uncharacteristically blunt and argumentative, but she mostly manages to keep a gentle and tactful disposition. Under stress she can take drastic measures, like trying to escape from her hometown and fleeing to Jeffrey, after having had a mental breakdown.
