Game of Thrones: Daenerys Targaryen (INFJ)

Functional Order: Ni/Fe/Ti/Se

Dominate Function: Ni

Daenerys is a charismatic leader, but she grew into her confidence. For a long time, she was reserved and introverted. She is highly observant, seeing beyond the functional to understand symbolic meanings. She is highly aware of how her actions and gestures will be taken symbolically, and can promote a cult of personality around her story. She is future driven, always looking to long-term goals and how her choices will help or hurt her plans. She looks for contingency plans and keeps in mind how to move forward. Her extroverted feeling function gives her purpose, and her introverted intuition function gives her the schematic to achieve those goals.

Auxiliary Function: Fe

Daenerys is extremely sensitive to what other people are thinking and feeling. She craves harmony and peace, and empathizes strongly with suffering. As a young child she followed her brother, and internalized his values and feelings. When she began riding with the Dothraki, she assimilated their values as well, creating a more complex identity and worldview. She picks up on subtlety and subtext, and knows when her friends and followers are struggling and when they stand passionately behind her. Her goal of reclaiming the Iron Throne is motivated by the desire to bring peace and stability to Westeros rather than a personal desire of “I deserve this”. Daenerys will always think “they need me” before anything else.

Tertiary Function: Ti

Although Daenerys always has a plan up her sleeve, she rarely tells people of them. She does not need to talk her ideas out with others in order to organize them, instead preferring to meditate on her sense of logic and order alone. Finding a logical order to her philosophies and actions is less important to Daenerys than her drive to make the world around her at peace, but it is still an important function in her decision-making process.

Inferior Function: Se

This is Daenerys’ least developed function, but still very clearly present. Although she is primarily driven by her future plans, when she is put under stress she can get wrapped up in her immediate problems. She gets so focused on fixing and harmonizing the immediate world around her that she is observing. She transitions well from one environment to another, and rarely reflects back on how different she was living in hiding or living with her brother. She cares about where she is going, where she is and does not get hung up on where she came from.
