The Mysterious Affair at Styles: Emily Inglethorp (ESFJ)

Functional Order: Fe/Si/Ne/Ti

Dominant Function: Fe

Emily is described as a „selfish woman in her own way“. While she presents herself as charitable and helps those in need, like her adopted daughter Cynthia, she also uses her fortune to control others and assert power over them. She always expects gratitude and little favors from her benefactors. She is emotionally manipulative and controlling, which causes her to be secretly unpopular by many, who knew her.

Auxiliary Function: Si

While involved in many charitable causes, she mainly supports traditional charity rather than something to progressive or controversial. Emily is also quite stubborn, always wanting things to go her way and disliking it when her pre established ideas are questioned. She is quite aware of her on physical needs and neeeds Cynthia to take care of her every whim. When helping others, she is mainly focused on providing them with practical support and securing their physical and emotional needs are met.

Tertiary Function: Ne

Her Ne isn‘t very visible in the short time she is alive throughout the novel, but she seems to welcome small changes, like Hastings living with them at their manson, or adopting Cynthia as a daughter. Still overall she seems to prefer routine over change and not always recognizes the bigger picture or when it’s time to implement new ideas.

Inferior Function: Ti

Emily is mainly focused on her emotional relationship with people and fails to notice that their is a complot to murder her behind her back. She is an active and energetic woman that rarely gets lost in thought and prefers to assert her influence in soft ways.
