Memoirs of a Geisha: Pumpkin (ISFP)

Functional Order: Fi/Se/Ni/Te

Dominant Function: Fi

Pumpkin is mostly inexpressive and quite about her feelings. Unlike Sayuri she isn‘t in touch with cultural norms and often seems a bit ungraceful in social sessions. That results in her superiors making fun of her, something she grows to resent. On the other hand she is quite authentic and does quite well with the American officials as she is so true to herself and funny. Pumpkin is also deeply sensitive, but able to hide her feelings well, shown in her shocking betrayal of Sayuri, after never expressing any feelings of anger towards her before. Pumpkin before growing embottered is carefree, meek and gentle with others, being loyal to her friends and superiors, but after receiving constant abuse and feeling betrayed by Sayuri she grow into a more embittered and cynical person.

Auxilliary Function: Se

Pumpkin is ever moving. She always is floating around, running through the streets of Japan, wherever life takes her and prone to making somewhat impulsive decisions, like taking the Chairman to Sayuris room and later regretting it. She is quite sensual and confident in her physique, enjoying good food, drinking and taking bath with her clients. She can be materialistic, striving for financial security, fine clothes and a life in affluence as a geisha.

Tertiary Function: Ni

Pumpkin isn‘t as gifted with words and metaphors as Sayuri and instead prefers to be more straightforward in her conversations, entertaining others with her quick wit and silly personality. Still she is surprisingly insightful at times, like when helping Sayuri against Hatsumomo. She reads her protege quite well and knows what plans she has in mind. All of her young life is centered around becoming heir to the Geisha house one day and she never even considers another’s option, which results in her being devastated when Sayuri takes that chance from her. Her one goal now becomes revenge, in which she succeeds years later.

Inferior Function: Te

Like young Sayuri, Pumpkin is shy and struggles to assert herself in the beginning. While she dislikes the strict hierarchy at her home, she accepts it temporarily and tries to find her own freedom from within. When this plan doesn‘t succeed thanks to Sayuri she becomes bitter, cynical and bold, taking on some of Hatsumomo‘s cruelty when interacting with others.
