Oliver is abrilliant graduate visiting Eli‘s family in Italy for studies.Oliver has a strong intuition. Elio visibly lights a red light in Oliver’s mind very early on - spelling out “danger ahead”. He knows full well where this relationship will go and yet his Fe makes him resist what he knows what will happen.Oliver deeply appreciates knowledge, creative talent and original thought. He is academically minded, and appreciates intellect in others. He always keeps the bigger picture in mind and tries to act wisely accordingly. He is novelity seeking, constantly adopting new ideas and mindset and is very non committal in everything he does. From endlessly discussing intellectual theories with Dr. Perlman to his constant upland downs in his relationship with Elio. Oliver is spirited and lives in the moment, following whatever inspiration he might find there.
Auxiliary Function: Ti
Oliver is quick witted and delights in discussing theories and pointing out others logical inconsistencies for the sake of it. On the outside he seems quite critical and detached from his feelings, seeking an intellectual equal in his relationship, rather than just a romantic partner. His Ti shows in his critical thinking and ability to estimate possible negative consequences of his relationship with Elio, as well as his ability to see the hypocrisy of their society regarding gay relationships. Oliver is open minded and not bound by any rules or social limitations, experimenting with his sexuality, because he can and feels curious about it.
Tertiary Function: Fe
Oliver is very social and warm. He has a talent of becoming well liked. Even though we later learn more of his insecurities, he easily projects effortless confidence. He sends Elio hints and signals, and is quick to interpret Elio flinching as reluctance. He tries to bring down all emotional boundaries with Elio when he asks him to call him by his name. Oliver is uncomfortable with confrontation - he avoids officially ending things with Chiara and also is generally quick to forgive. He doesn’t only easily compliment others, but also sees their value and potential, singling out Elio’s knowledge, talent and emotional depth. He cares more about societal norms than Elio and his family, and seems to carry some internalized shame about his sexual orientation.
Inferior Function: Si
With his lifestyle and romantic life he directly opposes the traditional values of their times. He is open towards wherever life will take him, but struggle to commit to one things. He is interested in discussing ne ideas and theories, but rarely bothers with the details or routine aspects of his work. Still Oliver is also very physical - he enjoys physical activity, dancing and cycling, and is very sensually aware - the cold water, the sun on the peaches, the way Elio says certain words. He deeply appreciates the sensuality and beauty of the Hellenic statues.
